Section 36-22-60 Qualifications; election; filling of vacancy; article applies only to elected sheriffs. Any sheriff, on or after July 19, 1979, of any county of this state may elect to participate in the supernumerary sheriff's program provided by this article. Each such supernumerary sheriff shall serve for life and receive from the county governing body in equal monthly installments, on the first of each month, an annual salary of 50 percent of the salary of the current Sheriff of Marengo County, which shall be adjustable in like manner with any salary increase the current sheriff shall receive.
