Section 45-37-232.40 Compensation; benefits; employment status. (a)(1) The Sheriff of Jefferson
County may employ a confidential secretary in lieu of an executive secretary. The confidential
secretary of the sheriff shall be paid the same compensation as the confidential secretary
of the Jefferson County Commission. The confidential secretary of the sheriff shall not be
subject to any merit system applicable to the employees of Jefferson County. If, at the time
of employment as a confidential secretary of the sheriff, the person employed is an employee
of Jefferson County and subject to a merit system, the person, upon the date of termination
as a confidential secretary of the sheriff, shall be entitled to return to the employ of Jefferson
County in a position subject to the merit system classification which is equal to or higher

Section 45-2-234.08 Terms of office; oath; compensation; appeals procedures. (a) The original
members shall serve for the following terms: One for one year, one for two years, one for
three years, and two for four years, as determined by the drawing of lots. Thereafter, all

Section 11-49B-6 Board of directors. (a) Each authority shall be governed by a board of directors.
All powers of the authority shall be exercised by the board or pursuant to its authorization.

Section 45-37-123.01 Definitions. For the purposes of this part, the following terms shall
have the following meanings: (1) ACT. The act adding this part, to be called the General Retirement

Section 45-48-121.11 Removal, discharge, or demotion of employee; proceedings; appeal. (a)
The county commission, any member of the governing body, or the head of any department or
office, respectively, can remove, discharge, or demote any merit employee who is directly
under such governing body, member thereof, or department head, provided that within five calendar
days a report in writing of such action is made to the board and employee, giving the reason
for such removal, discharge, or demotion. The employee shall have 10 calendar days from the
