Section 40-17-270 Definitions. For the purpose of this article, the following words shall have the following meanings: (1) AGREEMENT. The International Fuel Tax Agreement. (2) BASE JURISDICTION. The member jurisdiction where qualified motor vehicles are based for vehicle registration purposes. (3) COMMISSIONER. The Commissioner of the Department of Revenue. (4) DEPARTMENT. The Department of Revenue. (5) IN-JURISDICTION DISTANCE. The total number of miles or kilometers operated by a registrant's/licensee's qualified motor vehicles within a jurisdiction including miles operated under an International Fuel Tax Agreement temporary permit. (6) JURISDICTION. Any of the states of the United States, the District of Columbia, or a state or province of a foreign country or a territory or possession of either the United States or a foreign country. Section 40-12-253 Ad valorem taxation of motor vehicles. (a) Effective January 1, 2000, ad valorem taxes on motor vehicles shall be assessed and the tax collected forward on a current basis to coincide with the collection of motor vehicle license taxes and registration fees. (1) Ad valorem taxes on motor vehicles shall become due and payable on the first day of the registration renewal month of the owner, the date the motor vehicle enters the State of Alabama, the date the motor vehicle is removed from the inventory of a dealer, or the date on which the motor vehicle is otherwise determined to be taxable, whichever comes first. Section 40-17-150 Annual identification markers. (a) The commissioner shall provide by regulation for the issuance of an annual identification marker for every Alabama IFTA-based carriers' qualified vehicles and the qualified vehicles from non-IFTA-member jurisdictions, as defined in Article 9 of Chapter 17 of this title, for a fee based on administrative costs of administering the agreements pursuant to Article 9 of Chapter 17 of this title.
