Section 40-17-140 Definitions. For the purpose of this article, the following terms shall have
the meanings respectively ascribed by this section: (1) MOTOR VEHICLE. Any passenger vehicle
that has seats for more than nine passengers in addition to the driver, or any road tractor,
or any tractor truck, or any truck having more than two axles. (2) MOTOR CARRIER. Every person,
firm, or corporation who or which operates or causes to be operated on any highway in this
state any motor vehicle, as defined herein, except any resident person, firm, or corporation
owning or operating not more than one such motor vehicle for his own use and not for hire,
and except any person, firm, or corporation the motor vehicles of which are operated or caused

Section 32-5A-191.3 Operation of vessel and other marine devices while under influence of alcohol
or controlled substances. (a) A person shall not operate or be in actual physical control
of any vessel, or manipulate any water skis, aquaplane, or any other marine transportation
device on the waters of this state, as the waters are defined in Section 33-5-3, under any
condition in which a person would be guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Section 32-5A-191.4 Ignition interlock devices. (a) As used in Section 32-5A-191, the term,
"ignition interlock device" means a constant monitoring device that prevents a motor
vehicle from being started at any time without first determining the equivalent blood alcohol
level of the operator through the taking of a breath sample for testing. The system shall
be calibrated so that the motor vehicle may not be started if the blood alcohol level of the
operator, as measured by the test, reaches a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.02. (b)

Section 32-7A-4 Liability insurance required. (a) No person shall operate, register, or maintain
registration of, and no owner shall permit another person to operate, register, or maintain
registration of, a motor vehicle designed to be used on a public highway unless the motor

Section 40-12-253 Ad valorem taxation of motor vehicles. (a) Effective January 1, 2000, ad
valorem taxes on motor vehicles shall be assessed and the tax collected forward on a current
basis to coincide with the collection of motor vehicle license taxes and registration fees.
