Section 34-21-123 Applications for licensure in a party state. (a) Upon application for a multistate license, the licensing board in the issuing party state shall ascertain, through the coordinated licensure information system, all of the following: (1) Whether the applicant has ever held, or is the holder of, a license issued by any other state. (2) Whether there are any encumbrances on any license or multistate licensure privilege held by the applicant. (3) Whether any adverse action has been taken against any license or multistate licensure privilege held by the applicant. (4) Whether the applicant is currently participating in an alternative program. (b) A nurse may hold a multistate license, issued by the home state, in only one party state at a time. In order to strengthen access to health care, and in recognition of the advances in the delivery of health care, the member states of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact have allied in common purpose to develop a comprehensive process that complements the existing licensing and regulatory authority of state medical boards, provides a streamlined process that allows physicians to become licensed in multiple states, thereby enhancing the portability of a medical license and promoting the safety of patients.
