Section 45-26-81.44 Payment of ad valorem vehicle tax prerequisite to issuance of license or transfer; certificate of assessment. THIS SECTION WAS AMENDED AND RENUMBERED BY ACT 2020-37 AND 38 IN THE 2020 REGULAR SESSION, EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2020. THIS IS NOT IN THE CURRENT CODE SUPPLEMENT. IT IS FORMER SECTION 45-26-81.44. To prevent motor vehicles from escaping taxation and to provide for a more efficient procedure for the assessment and collection of taxes due on motor vehicles, no licenses shall be issued to operate motor vehicles on the public highways of this state, nor shall any transfer be made by the judge of probate until the ad valorem tax on the vehicles has been paid to the county for the preceding year as evidenced by receipt from the judge of probate. (a) Each insurer, health service corporation, and health benefit plan that issues or renews any policy of accident or health insurance providing benefits for medical or hospital expenses for its insured persons shall pay for services rendered by Alabama health care providers within 45 calendar days upon receipt of a clean written claim or 30 calendar days upon receipt of a clean electronic claim. (a) Effective January 1, 2000, ad valorem taxes on motor vehicles shall be assessed and the tax collected forward on a current basis to coincide with the collection of motor vehicle license taxes and registration fees.
