Section 36-30-1 Definitions; dependents; persons eligible for compensation. (a) For the purposes of this chapter, the following words and phrases shall have the following meanings: (1) AWARDING AUTHORITY. The State Board of Adjustment, created and existing pursuant to Article 4, Chapter 9 of Title 41. (2) COMPENSATION. The money benefits paid on account of injury or death which occurred during the course of employment or activity as a peace officer or firefighter and is in the nature of workers' compensation. (3) DEPENDENT CHILD. An unmarried child under the age of 18 years, or one over the age of 18 who is physically or mentally incapacitated from earning. (4) DIRECT AND PROXIMATE RESULT OF A HEART ATTACK OR STROKE. Section 32-2-10 Insurance for employees. The state Department of Public Safety is authorized, subject to approval by the Governor, to insure its employees in some insurance company or companies authorized to do business in the State of Alabama against personal injury or death caused by accident or violence while discharging their duties as such employees; provided, the amount of insurance to be procured as to any such employee shall not exceed the amount which would be payable to such employee under the workmen's compensation laws of the State of Alabama if such employee were privately employed; except, that such policy may provide additional benefits not to exceed $10,000.00 per employee for the payment of hospital and medical expenses. Section 25-5-85 Procedure for and effect of payment of compensation to court appointed trustee.
