the sheriff or other officer to whom the summons is issued shall serve the same by leaving
a copy thereof at the office of the defendant, if known, or at his last place of residence;
and the sheriff shall forthwith publish in some newspaper published in the county or, if no
newspaper is published in the county, in the newspaper published nearest thereto a copy of
the summons and notice to the defendant where a copy thereof has been left for him. The sheriff
shall make return of the summons as in other cases, stating the facts, and such service shall
be as valid to all intents and purposes as personal service on the defendant; and,

the duty of the sheriff of the county to enclose the subpoenas in an envelope addressed to
the person to be served and place all necessary postage and a return address thereon. In the
event the witness subpoena is returned to the sheriff by the post office department of the
United States without delivery, the subpoena shall be by the sheriff returned NOT FOUND. All
witness subpoenas not returned to the sheriff by the post office department shall be considered
for all purposes as sufficient personal and legal service. It is specifically provided,

Section 22-11A-27 Commitment petition - Notice of petition to be served; contents. When any
petition has been filed seeking to commit a person to the custody of the Alabama Department
of Public Health on the ground that such person is a danger to public health and such petition
has been reviewed by the probate judge, the probate judge shall order the sheriff of the county
