Section 34-17A-7 Employees; meetings; powers. (a) The board may employ a director, secretary,
attorneys, experts, and other employees as it may from time to time find necessary for the
proper performance of its duties, and for whom the necessary funds are appropriated. (b) The
board shall elect annually a chair and a vice chair. Each member shall receive the same per
diem and travel allowance as state employees for each day of attendance at an official meeting
of the board. The board shall hold at least one regular meeting each year. Additional meetings
may be held at the discretion of the chair or at the written request of any two members of
the board. A majority of the current appointed members of the board shall constitute a quorum.
(c) The board shall examine and pass on the qualifications of all applicants and shall issue
a license to each successful applicant attesting to his or her professional qualifications

Section 34-18-46 Meetings; quorum. The board shall meet at least once in each year for the
purpose of holding examinations as in this chapter provided and at such other times as the

Section 45-37A-50.06 Vacancies. A vacancy on the board of education shall be filled by appointment
by a majority of the remaining members of the board of education for the unexpired term. If
the vacancy is not filled by the remaining members of the board of education within 30 days,
the chair, or the vice chair in the absence of the chair, shall notify the Birmingham City
Council which shall fill the vacancy by appointment by a majority of the members of the city
council for the unexpired term. If the vacancy is not filled by the city council within 30

Section 16-11-3 Election; terms of office; vacancies. Annually at the regular meetings of the
city council or commission in April the council or commission shall elect a member or members
of the board of education to succeed those whose term or terms of office expire that year.
Members of the city board of education shall assume office at the next regular meeting of
the city board of education in June following their appointment. The terms of office of members
of the city board of education shall be five years, and the term of one member shall expire
annually. A member shall serve on the board until his or her successor assumes office. In

Section 16-25A-8 Funding of health insurance plan; participation; Public Education Employees'
Health Insurance Fund. (a) The Public Education Employees' Health Insurance Board is hereby

the State Board of Health is not in session, the State Committee of Public Health shall act
