Section 39-2-12 Partial and final payments of contractors by awarding authorities. (a) As used in this section the following words shall have the meanings ascribed to them as follows: (1) CONTRACTOR. Any natural person, partnership, company, firm, corporation, association, limited liability company, cooperative, or other legal entity licensed by the Alabama State Licensing Board for General Contractors. (2) NONRESIDENT CONTRACTOR. A contractor which is neither a. organized and existing under the laws of the State of Alabama, nor b. maintains its principal place of business in the State of Alabama. A nonresident contractor which has maintained a permanent branch office within the State of Alabama for at least five continuous years shall not thereafter be deemed to be a nonresident contractor so long as the contractor continues to maintain a branch office within Alabama. Section 25-4-51 Rates of contributions, etc., by employers. (a) Contributions. Except as hereinafter provided and subject to the provisions of Section 25-4-54, every employer shall pay contributions, or payments in lieu of contributions, equal to the percentages of wages payable or paid as hereinafter set out, with respect to employment by him. Section 27-10-31 Annual tax of surplus line brokers. (a) On or before the first day of March each year, the surplus line broker shall remit to the State Treasurer through the commissioner, as a tax imposed for the privilege of transacting business as a surplus line broker in this state, a tax of six percent on the direct premiums, less return premiums and exclusive of sums collected to cover state or federal taxes, on surplus line insurance subject to tax transacted by the broker during the preceding calendar year as shown by the annual statement filed with the commissioner.
