Section 45-28-140 Purchase of gasoline or motor fuel; equipment repairs. (a) This section shall apply only to Etowah County. (b) It is the legislative intent of this section to declare that volunteer rescue squads, volunteer fire departments, certain retired senior citizen volunteer organizations, and certain other charitable foundations, agencies, and organizations are performing vital governmental functions or services in behalf of the public welfare of our citizens and for the public purpose. Section 45-48-142.23 Fire protection service fee - Referendum. (a) After the county commission establishes a fire district, the qualified electors of that district may file a petition, signed by at least five percent of the qualified electors in the fire district who voted in the last general election, with the office of the judge of probate who shall then order a referendum to be held in the fire district on the question of establishing a fire protection service fee for the fire district. Section 45-48-142.27 shall apply to all elections provided by this subpart. The fire protection service fee shall be collected, administered, and enforced in the same manner, and under the same requirements and laws as are the ad valorem taxes of this state. In the case of mobile homes, the fee shall be collected, administered, and enforced at the same time, in the same manner, and under the same requirements and laws as the annual registration fee for manufactured homes provided in Section 40-12-255.
