Section 11-43A-16 Duties of mayor; assistant mayor; vacancy; mayor pro tempore; vacancies; exceptions in Class 6 cities and Class 7 municipalities. (a) The mayor shall preside at the meetings of the council and shall be recognized as the head of the municipal government for all ceremonial purposes and by the Governor for purpose of military law, but shall have no other administrative duties. (b) In all cities to which this section applies, except Class 6 cities wherein the municipal governing body has elected to have a nine-member council, as authorized in Section 11-43A-8, and except in municipalities organized under Section 11-43A-1.1, the councilman-at-large shall be assistant mayor and shall act as mayor during the absence or disability of the mayor. Section 11-43D-21 Temporary absence or disability of mayor; filling vacancies. (a) In the case of absences of the mayor from the city or his inability to serve on account of sickness or any other good reason, the president of the council or president pro tem of the council, in case of absence or disability of the president of the council, shall act as mayor pro tempore with the power and authority of the mayor during such time. As used in this article, unless the context indicates otherwise, the following words, terms, and phrases shall have the meanings ascribed to them: (1) APPOINTING AUTHORITY. Section 45-39A-13.02 Composition of civil service board. The civil service board shall consist of five members to be appointed by the members of the City Council of the City of Florence. In each year the city council shall appoint one person as the successor to the member of the civil service board whose term shall expire that year.
