Section 26-2A-20 General definitions. As used in this chapter the following terms shall have the following meanings, respectively, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise: (1) CLAIMS. In respect of a protected person, includes liabilities of the protected person, whether arising in contract, tort, or otherwise, and liabilities of the estate which arise at or after the appointment of a conservator, including expenses of administration. (2) CONSERVATOR. A person who is appointed by a court to manage the estate of a protected person and includes a limited conservator described in Section 26-2A-148(a). (3) COURT. A probate court of this state. (4) COURT REPRESENTATIVE. A person appointed in a guardianship or protective proceeding who is trained in law, nursing, or social work, is an officer, employee, or special appointee of the court, and has no personal interest in the proceeding. Section 16-64-1 Definitions. For the purposes of this chapter, the following terms have the following meanings: (1) MINOR. An individual who, because of age, lacks the capacity to contract under Alabama law. Under current law, this means a single individual under 19 years of age and a married individual under 18 years of age, but excludes an individual whose disabilities of nonage have been removed by a court of competent jurisdiction for a reason other than establishing a legal residence in Alabama. Section 40-23-50 Tax levied; collection and enforcement. (a) There is hereby levied, in addition to all other taxes of every kind now imposed by law, and shall be collected, as herein provided, a privilege or license tax against the person on account of the business activities engaged in and in the amount to be determined by the application of rates against gross receipts, as follows: Upon every person, firm or corporation engaged or continuing within this state in the business of contracting to construct, reconstruct or build any public highway, road, bridge, or street, an amount equal to five percent of the gross receipts derived from performance of such contracts. Section 41-5A-14 Subpoenas. (a) The chief examiner may issue subpoenas to compel the attendance of witnesses and production of papers necessary as evidence in connection with a dispute, claim, examination, audit, or the administration of this chapter.
