Section 22-9A-14 Death registration. (a) A certificate of death for each death which occurs in this state shall be filed with the Office of Vital Statistics, or as otherwise directed by the State Registrar, within five days of the death and shall be registered if it has been completed and filed in accordance with this section. (1) If the place of death is not known, but the dead body is found in this state, the certificate of death shall be completed and filed in accordance with this section. The county where the body is found shall be shown on the certificate as the county of death. If the date of death is unknown, the date the dead body was found shall be shown on the certificate as the date of death. (2) When death occurs in a moving conveyance in the United States and the body is first removed from the conveyance in this state, the death shall be registered in this state and the county where it is first removed shall be considered as the county of death. Section 26-16-115 Duties of county coroner or medical examiner. (a) In every case of SUID, the county coroner or medical examiner shall be notified and cooperate and assist law enforcement with the death investigation. (b) The county coroner or medical examiner shall obtain legal authorization to send the infant to a forensic pathologist for examination. (c) The county coroner or medical examiner shall contact the appropriate law enforcement personnel to conduct a death investigation according to the protocol developed by the SUIDI Team. (a)(1) The State Board of Medical Examiners on its own motion may investigate any evidence which appears to show that a physician or osteopath holding a certificate of qualification to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State of Alabama is or may be guilty of any of the acts, offenses, or conditions set out in Section 34-24-360. (a) In Cleburne County, any county health officer or administrator is hereby authorized to issue an official death certificate in any case within the county, except where an autopsy is required.
