Section 26-16-115 Duties of county coroner or medical examiner. (a) In every case of SUID, the county coroner or medical examiner shall be notified and cooperate and assist law enforcement with the death investigation. (b) The county coroner or medical examiner shall obtain legal authorization to send the infant to a forensic pathologist for examination. (c) The county coroner or medical examiner shall contact the appropriate law enforcement personnel to conduct a death investigation according to the protocol developed by the SUIDI Team. The investigation shall be initiated within 24 hours of the time the appropriate law enforcement personnel is contacted. (a) In Calhoun County, any county health officer or administrator is hereby authorized to issue an official death certificate in any case within the county, except where an autopsy is required. Data obtained from the attending physician or funeral director shall be kept on file for one year following the death for the purpose of issuing such death certificate.
