Section 11-43D-2 Adoption of ordinance establishing boundaries of council districts; election of mayor and city council; assumption of office; future elections; powers and duties. If said ordinance as hereinabove set out be adopted by the governing body of any municipality to which this chapter applies, then: (1) Within 90 days thereafter the governing body shall adopt an ordinance establishing the boundaries of the six council districts herein provided for and shall take such steps as are necessary to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended. (2) The election of the mayor and all the members of the city council shall be held as set by ordinance by the council and quadrennially thereafter and in accordance with the provisions and terms of the general election laws governing mayor-council elections under the general laws of the State of Alabama. Section 11-44G-1 Procedures in event of vacancy - City council. (a)(1) A vacancy in the office of city council member in any Class 7 or Class 8 municipality shall be filled by the city council at the next regular meeting or any subsequent meeting of the council. The person elected shall hold office for the unexpired term. In the event a vacancy is not filled within 60 days after it occurs in a Class 7 or Class 8 municipality, each existing city council member, including the mayor, may submit a name to the Governor for appointment. Two or more municipalities may jointly acquire real property by condemnation, purchase or gift, for airport purposes, and may jointly establish, construct, equip, maintain and operate an airport thereon for the joint benefit of such municipalities.
