and decertification of volunteer fire departments. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:Section
1. Section 9-3-17, Code of Alabama 1975, is amended to read as follows: ยง9-3-17. "(a)
The term "volunteer fire department" shall apply to and be used to define an organized
group of area residents who meet the following requirements for personnel, training and equipment:
"(1) The group shall be organized and incorporated under the laws of the State of Alabama
as a nonprofit organization or as an authority of a...

1 01-MAR-16 SYNOPSIS: Under existing law, volunteer fire departments are certified by the
Alabama Forestry Commission based on minimum requirements specified by law. This bill would
further specify the minimum requirements for certification of volunteer fire departments and
authorizing decertification of departments. The bill would also authorize the Forestry Commission
to adopt rules providing procedures for certification of volunteer fire departments and for
the decertification of departments which do not continue to meet the minimum requirements
