In 1996, as a condition of state eligibility for federal funding of child support enforcement, Congress mandated that each state enact the UIFSA. In 2008, the Uniform Law Commission amended UIFSA to incorporate the provisions of the Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support of Family Maintenance into state law. The Convention contains provisions that establish uniform procedures for the processing of international child support cases. In 2014, Congress enacted the Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act.
