SB118 By Senator Chambliss ENROLLED, An Act, Relating to certified public accountants; to amend Section 34-1-4, Code of Alabama 1975, to revise the citizenship qualifications for certification, and to reduce the semester and quarter hour education requirements for eligibility to sit for the CPA examination. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:Section 1. Section 34-1-4, Code of Alabama 1975, is amended to read as follows: §34-1-4. "(a) If each of the following qualifications is met, the certificate of certified public accountant shall be granted by the board to any person: "(1) Who is a citizen of the United States or, if not a citizen of the United States, a person who is legally present in the United States with appropriate documentation from the federal government., or has duly declared his or her intent to become a citizen. This bill would remove the provision allowing certification if the individual declares his or her intent to become a citizen. Also under existing law, in order to be eligible to sit for the uniform CPA examination, a person must have completed a total of 150 semester hours or 225 quarter hours of education, including a baccalaureate degree at a regionally accredited college or university. This bill would reduce the semester and quarter hours required to 120 and 180, respectively, effective January 1, 2016.
