SB213 ENGROSSED By Senators Melson, Brewbaker, Shelnutt, Stutts, Albritton and Orr A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT Relating to heart defibrillators; to amend Section 6-5-332.3, Code of Alabama 1975; to encourage potential users of AEDs to successfully complete appropriate training on the use of AEDs; to require manufacturers of AEDs to provide in-service training on the use and operation of AEDs. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:Section 1. Section 6-5-332.3, Code of Alabama 1975, is amended to read as follows: ยง6-5-332.3. "(a) The Legislature of the State of Alabama finds the following: "(1) Early defibrillation may sustain the life and temporarily stabilize a person in cardiac arrest, thus helping to preserve the Alabama family. "(2) The American Heart Association estimates that more than 350,000 Americans die each year from out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest, and 20,000 deaths may be prevented each year if automated external defibrillators were more widely available....

This bill would further provide that any application for the state death benefit that was submitted after April 29, 2010, and was denied because the decedent was not employed as a firefighter or law enforcement peace officer on the date of death may be resubmitted within six months of this bill becoming law and the awarding authority is permitted to reconsider and to grant the application.
