By Representative Weaver HB246 ENROLLED, An Act, Relating to heart defibrillators; to amend Section 6-5-332.3, Code of Alabama 1975; to encourage potential users of AEDs to successfully complete appropriate training on the use of AEDs; to require manufacturers of AEDs to provide in-service training on the use and operation of AEDs. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:Section 1. Section 6-5-332.3, Code of Alabama 1975, is amended to read as follows: §6-5-332.3. "(a) The Legislature of the State of Alabama finds the following: "(1) Early defibrillation may sustain the life and temporarily stabilize a person in cardiac arrest, thus helping to preserve the Alabama family. "(2) The American Heart Association estimates that more than 350,000 Americans die each year from out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest, and 20,000 deaths may be prevented each year if automated external defibrillators were more widely available. A volunteer who, in good faith, performs the care without making any charge for goods or services therefor may not be liable for any civil damages as a result of any act or omission by the volunteer in rendering the care or as a result of any act or failure to act to provide or arrange for care for the person with a disability or a chronic illness, if the volunteer acts as a reasonably prudent person would have acted under the same or similar circumstances.
