SYNOPSIS: Under existing law, a person may not register to vote during the 14-day period prior to any election.

This bill would allow a person to register to vote on any day a board of registrars maintains office hours including the day of any election.

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT

Relating to voter registration; to amend Section 17-3-50, Code of Alabama 1975, by allowing a person to register to vote on any day a board of registrars maintains office hours including the day of any election.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:Section 1. Section 17-3-50, Code of Alabama 1975, is amended to read as follows:

ยง17-3-50.

"The boards A board of registrars in the several counties of the state shall not register any person as a qualified elector within 14 days prior to any election; provided, that the boards shall register any person possessing the qualifications of an elector on any day the board maintains office hours. A board of registrars shall maintain open offices during business days in such during the 14-day period prior to any election and on election day during the hours of voting. The Secretary of State may adopt rules to implement this section."

Section 2. This act shall become effective on the first day of the third month following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
