SYNOPSIS: This bill would provide for the issuance of a personalized in memory license plate honoring deceased family members.

This bill would provide that a motor vehicle owner who is a resident of the state could request a personalized in memory license motor vehicle tag upon payment of an additional fee of $25.

This bill would provide for distribution of the additional tag fee to the State General Fund.

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT

To provide for the issuance of a personalized in memory license plate honoring deceased family members; to provide for an additional fee for the license plate; and to provide for the distribution of the proceeds of the additional fee.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:

Section 1. (a) Notwithstanding Sections 32-6-64, 32-6-67, and 32-6-68 of the Code of Alabama 1975, upon application to the judge of probate or license commissioner, compliance with motor vehicle registration and licensing laws, payment of regular fees required by law for license plates for private passenger or pleasure motor vehicles, and payment of an additional annual fee of twenty-five dollars ($25), owners of motor vehicles who are residents of Alabama shall upon request be issued a personalized in memory license plate honoring deceased family members.

(b) These plates shall be valid for five years and may then be replaced with either a conventional, personalized, or distinctive license plate.

(c) Payment of required license fees and taxes for the years during which a new plate is not issued shall be evidenced as provided in Section 32-6-63 of the Code of Alabama 1975.

(d) The plates shall be issued, printed, and processed like other distinctive or personalized plates provided for by law.

(e) The State Revenue Department shall prescribe for identification purposes any number or symbol necessary to the language requested by a person for an in memory tag issued.

(f) The additional revenues derived from the sales of the distinctive motor vehicle license plates shall be distributed monthly to the State General Fund.

Section 2. This act shall become effective on the first day of the third month following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
